Carte Blanche at DuPont |
|
Part of the fun of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), which is held annually at New York City’s Jacob Javits Center, are the events that take place off-site after show hours or even before the show officially opens, as was the case with an intimate press breakfast held yesterday by DuPont in conjunction with French design magazine Intramuros. The occasion was Intramuros‘s 25th anniversary and the event was to announce the opening of the exhibition “Carte Blanche” at the DuPont Corian Design Studio in New York. Scheduled to run from May 17 through July 2, it features a series of 25 works by designers who have graced the cover of Intramuros. All were provided with two A4 sheets of Designer White Corian—one to use for practice and the other for “real”—and given complete freedom to design whatever they wanted with the material. The resulting pieces showcase a variety of fabrication techniques as well as a range of aesthetic sensibilities, conceptual thought and, of course, the versatility of Corian, which, thanks to the designers’ creativity, seems to transform in appearance, meaning and weight—both visual and psychological—from one work to the next. Among those on display are “Physical Illusion” by Tom Bracher (above), “Carte Blanche” by Patricia Urquiola, “The Blank Pages” by Philippe Nigro and “Out of Focus” by Thierry Gaugain. The other 21 designers include: Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, Gilles Belley, Riccardo Blumer, Constantin Boym, Philippe Délis, Stefan Diez, Jean-François Dingjian, Sylvain Dubuisson, Jean-Louis Fréchin, Ineke Hans, Mathieu Lehanneur, Arik Levy, Philippe Nigro, Patrick Norguet, Jonathan Olivares, Gabriele Pezzini, Christophe Pillet, Inge Sempé, Paolo Ulian, Marcel Wanders, Terence Woodgate and Michael Young. All are worth checking out. The studio is located at 49 West 23rd Street, on the 3rd Floor, in New York.
